Cliff Garrun on mentorship, leadership, and building industry confidence

The Garrun Group continues to be an active supporter of professional development and industry transformation, and we’re proud to highlight the contributions of one of our own Cliff Garrun, who is once again serving as a mentor in the IIG Roots & Wings programme.
Now in his third year, Cliff’s involvement goes beyond a sense of duty. “I thoroughly enjoy it,” he shares. “I find it fascinating to hear other people’s life journeys; stories I wouldn’t ordinarily be exposed to. And I’ve been incredibly impressed by every mentee I’ve worked with so far.”
This year, Cliff is mentoring two participants - locally based Iman Dalia from Fulcrum Group, and as part of the IIG International programme, which supports mentees outside of Gauteng, a Durban-based mentee.
The programme provides mentors with a clear framework, but Cliff believes in keeping it personal and adaptable. “You quickly get a sense of where your mentee is at - their challenges, their goals - and then you tailor your support. It’s not about a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about really understanding the individual.”
For Cliff, much of the work revolves around building self-confidence. “That’s often the biggest value a mentor brings. It’s about helping someone believe in their own voice and potential.”
He also encourages mentees to take charge of what they can control - like pursuing qualifications (such as the RE1 or RE5 exams), or identifying learning opportunities in their current roles. “It's not always about finding a new job. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs happen when people grow right where they are.”
Cliff is passionate about developing future leaders, and sees mentorship as a vital part of that journey. “It’s our responsibility, as experienced professionals, to give back. We can’t expect the industry to grow without investing in people, mentoring, guiding, encouraging. That’s how we retain talent and build a stronger, more resilient future for insurance in South Africa.”
He’s also gained a lot personally through the programme. “You develop a good sense for people - their strengths, potential, and where they need support. It sharpens your own leadership and perspective.”
Cliff’s commitment to growth, collaboration, and skills development is just one of the many ways the Garrun Group is investing in the future of the industry. We’re proud to support initiatives like IIG Roots & Wings, where knowledge is shared, confidence is built, and careers are shaped.
