At Garrun, we believe that leadership is about lifting others as we climb. That’s why we’re so proud of team members like Alison van Niekerk, who generously share their time, insight, and experience as mentors in the IIG Roots & Wings programme.

This year, Alison is mentoring Keolebogile Kagung from Marsh - an experience she describes as both a privilege and a personal highlight.

With over three decades of experience in the industry, Alison brings deep knowledge and a passion for people development to the programme. She spent her early years at Standard Bank Financial Services before joining the Garrun Group, where she has contributed across a variety of departments for nearly 30 years.

“I chose to be part of the Roots & Wings programme because it offers a structured, holistic approach to mentorship,” she shares. “Its focus on personal, professional, and emotional well-being aligns perfectly with my own belief that real growth happens when we nurture the whole person.”

For Alison, the most rewarding part of the journey is seeing mentees thrive:
“Watching someone grow in confidence, sharpen their skills, and achieve their goals - knowing I’ve helped support that journey - is incredibly fulfilling.”

But it’s not a one-way exchange. Alison is quick to acknowledge the impact mentorship has had on her own growth:
“It’s a two-way street. Being a mentor challenges me to reflect, adapt, and keep learning. It’s strengthened my leadership and coaching abilities while helping me stay connected to fresh thinking and emerging perspectives in our industry.”

She believes mentorship is key to developing the next generation of confident, capable industry leaders - those ready to drive transformation and innovation.
