Mentorship: A Deeply Personal Experience

One of the greatest privileges of mentoring is witnessing a mentee discover hope, confidence, and positivity. This is not a superficial process; it is an intensely personal experience. Effective mentorship requires going far beyond the workplace. To truly guide someone, you must gain deep insight into their life journey, family dynamics, education, personal challenges, aspirations, and relationships both inside and outside the work environment.

There is inevitably a good measure of psychology involved. Sensitivity, compassion, and genuine support form the bedrock of the mentor–mentee relationship. It demands presence and empathy in ways that differ significantly from traditional professional roles.

Where Mentorship Meets Leadership

I have spent most of my adult life in leadership roles, and while leadership can expose you to a diversity of personalities and experiences, mentorship stands apart. It is a far more focused endeavour, with collaboration and inspiration as its central pillars.

Leadership experience certainly helps; it provides context and wisdom that can support the mentoring process. But it does not provide all the answers. If anything, mentorship requires you to rediscover yourself. It is not an employer–employee relationship. It is something far deeper and more human.

The Eight-Month Journey

Each mentee is unique. The Roots and Wings eight-month programme is a journey of growth, self-discovery, and accomplishment, for both mentor and mentee. Leadership experience within the industry helps in guiding mentees through the realities of organisational life: office dynamics, relationships with colleagues, conflict management, and navigating company politics. In these contexts, mentors can offer both strategic and tactical advice.

Personally, I have found this mentoring journey enriching and inspiring. Every year teaches me something new.

A Testament to True Transformation

“Transformation” is a word frequently used in South Africa, across all sectors. But for me, the Roots and Wings programme epitomises true transformation. Having been in one job for 45 years, I have had a front-row seat to the transformation within our industry, the growing professionalism, the commitment to meaningful development, and the genuine effort to uplift and empower talent. It is a uniquely South African story, and one of which our industry can be immensely proud.
